The LulzBot AO-101 is one of the top personal 3D printers on the market. You can expect to pay anywhere from $1,500-$2,500 for these printers and unlike some smaller personal printers a bit of assembly is required before putting it to use.
All the necessary tools are included with the printer in order to construct it and the directions are straightforward and easy to understand. If you are unfamiliar with the assembly of 3D printers it is suggested that you view videos online in order to be walked-through the assembly process.
One of the best features of the LulzBot AO-101 is a build plate that is heated and significantly larger than most other personal printers. Above the large, heated build plate, the nozzle is able to extend nearly 4 inches and is able to print creations with dimensions as large as 7 x 7 x 7 inches.
The two accepted filaments for this printer are both ABS and PLA. The LulzBot AO-101 is able to complete multi-color printing though colored filaments must be purchased separately online. Even wood filaments are able to be purchased and used with this printer.
The filament container is better than what you would find on most other personal 3D printers because it rests on the side, giving you more access to the top of the printer. Another advantage regarding filaments for the LulzBot is that they are not spooled and thus more inexpensive than traditional, spooled filaments.
The USB port located on the printer is how you will connect to your computer in order to upload and print designs. There is also an SD card reader for people who want to upload designs via an SD card. At this point the LulzBot and many printers like it are not able to connect wirelessly, though as 3D printing technology improves this will likely become a mainstay with every printer.
The LulzBot comes equipped with all the necessary software you need to run the device, though the software is not equipped with any design models or plans. Luckily, however, there are plenty of designs and models online that are able to be downloaded to the software free of charge.
Also included with your purchase are both a power supply and USB cable.
The nozzle is able to print at about 200mm per second and comes with three different nozzle sizes; .25mm, .35mm, and .5mm. When you change your nozzle you are required to use Slic3r code generator in order to complete the configuration process for it. If you neglect to accurately configure the nozzle once you have attached it your creation’s layer dimensions and accuracy may be inaccurate
The LulzBot AO-101 comes with a USB and SD connection which makes it versatile as far as connections are concerned. One drawback that we found was the fact that you need to assemble this printer in order to use it. Because not everyone is adept at building 3D printers this process can become quite frustrating.
Despite the assembly, the LulzBot AO-101 is one of our top printers due to its exceptional print speed, reliable construction, and its inclusion of 3 different nozzle sizes.
